OK, I finally got it fixed. and I really should have looked at this first, so I'm sorry for putting everyone who looked at this on a wild goose chase. But I've been putting off working on this because I've had other projects and while I can rebuild, I didn't want to. But the overscan didn't work, it would not pull it to the left like I wanted, I made sure the TV was on game mode and not stretching or adding any post processing. I had a spare TV and wanted to rule out the TV, and behold I seen this

I commented out the hdmi_drive=2 and it all works.
I'm not even going to pretend I know what was going on, but my guess the damaged connector was pushing sound through what was left working of the cable and had to push the video to the side to make room for that. I dunno, but new cord, and verified it's working. I'm going to buy some backup HDMI cables just in case and really try to come up with a better solution to where I sit the Retropie

@Striderx99 I don't see the point in installing pulseaudio and then disabling it, but RetroPie will use the audio system you have configured in your system - you can install and configure PulseAudio using the Ubuntu package repositories, just like on any other Linux distro.

Out of the box, RetroPie doesn't have any background music functionality, is this a 3rd party script that's running ?

Are you using a 3rd party image or the RetroPie image from https://retropie.org.uk/download ? The official RetroPIe image doesn't have this issue and we don't support 3rd party images here in the forums.

Please add the info requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first to be able diagnose this further.

Tried AlsaMixer although I was a bit confused to how it worked. It was set to 66% with HDMI listed at the bottom. I pressed F3 for [Playback] thinking that was to test the audio but again, nothing coming out of the TV. I've double checked that it's not muted and the volume is turned up to a reasonable level.

I'm confused on what you thought that would be required. I think the noaudio option is clear enough on what it does.

I'm completely ignorant to computing, so when I was looking for a fix to the visual tearing through the kms video driver, every example code I saw online for that driver included the noaudio line. I felt it was best to follow those examples to the letter and not remove it, even though it stuck out as odd. Because it never interfered with my audio playback, I didn't think to question it afterwards.

EDIT: My apologies, I'm actually going to have to pack this in for now and return to it tomorrow. Fingers crossed for better results and a clearer head!

But no, none of the clicks associated with switching between games in ES.

Based on your previous answers it sounds like PulseAudio is not starting on its own.

Try systemctl --user enable pulseaudio in the terminal, and reboot.

If you still have no audio please post the output of pacmd list-sinks.

@DKarn No problem, there's no rush. Try other values for the Audio Card setting. Did you happen to notice what are the settings for your friend's installation ?

The specific emulator I'm having trouble with is mupen64plus-glide64
the lr-mupen64plus works fine but looks awful and won't load high res textures. The mupen64plus-glide64 emulator worked great until I had to reinstall everything for other reasons. No system hardware has changed since I've started this.

@simon123 I noticed two things, (1) you are using USB-powered speakers and (2) you didn't seem to have test the suggesitons about using alsamixer.
So I have some suggestions for you to try:

Are you connecting these speakers to the RPI itself using a USB port? This might be problematic because the RPI is known to not deliver much power through the USB ports, and I suspects speakers are power hungry. Can you try to power the speakers with a laptop or other source via USB but the audio from the RPI? Can you go to a console and type the following command to set the volume using alsa: amixer sset PCM 90% unmute. This sets the volume reasonable high so be careful with the noise.

After point 2 you should see something like this (volume set to 90%):

Update: changing the advmane.rc from alsa to sdl fixed the no audio problem right away. Tested it by loading some games into the advmame folder, reloading emulation station and firing up the emulator with a game. Yes! Success! Thank you all. :-)

@janlopes really? Where are all the details of your setup? you even say you have tried things? What things? What did you edit? Which file? What did you type? Did you enable audio out properly? What do you have the volume level set to? What emulators have no sound? Which games? Which image? Official? Or a pre-loaded one? To enable others to help you please go back and read this

Ok, so reinstall with 4.1

removed the hash from in front of hdmi_drive2 (now that I can see the config file) and that seemed to do it. That berryboot was the main cause like you said @rbaker , I will say this though: the config file looks way different than a regular raspberry pi one. But Ill see about any other changes in another thread. Moral of the story is skip berry boot if you can.

@pawpie when you set the overscan thing right there is 4 lines for setting the overscan for all 4 sides of the screen. You need to slowly increase/decrease the numbers until you get it perfect on your screen.

For the ps3 controller you need to go into retropie setup and go into the drivers section and setup the ps3 controller in there.

Just an update, I fixed the issue and now it's running beautifully. It turns out I was following the directions correctly, but I had no idea I had to remove the #. If I hadn't asked, I wouldn't have known so thank you guys for all your help!
